Aesthetic
I have a certain aesthetic when it comes to art/ how art is viewed/ hung in a place. It's kind of transparent; I like to see what an image is on. I think that part of what makes an art piece is its surface and its structure. It can be a little raw but I want to know what went into make that image; what layers it took to get to that final presentation. Every art piece tells a story, but I'm uninterested in simply looking at a finite image. I don't like the glossiness and purity that happens when trying to make everything look perfect. I especially don't like the separation it creates, as if art can effectively portray its story just by looking at it. Viewing an art piece involves so much more.
Sometimes when I teach at pwat, I have those more anal people that obsess over the texture of the canvas coming through or their brushstrokes showing. I never know how to convince them that that's the nature of what they're doing. They are painting with a brush on a canvas and your art wants to demostrate that to you.
ANYWAY. I'm almost done with another Harvest Womb piece, I'm going to say it'll be done by this weekend. And I'm about to embark on a few small paintings of flowers after that to break up my own patterns of work. I'm still interested to see if anyone would like to purchase any Telegraphing prints, but they're also going to be shown in the LA State Archives building at the end of the Summer so I'll have to hold on to them for a bit longer.

Let's talk more about aesthetics, yeah?! I like what you said about seeing what the art object is made of - physically, and then in essence as well. They taught us the word "painterly" in reference to an excessive(?) use of paint on paint; in a big fan of painterly :)
I always thought painterly was such a weird word, they always told me that my work was so painterly during critiques in school. And all I thought was 'well, I'm using paint, aren't I?' I don't know why that term has always bothered me, I know what they mean by it, but I guess I feel like we can be so creative visually, can't we get better terms to describe things too? But yeah. I LOVE texture and I kinda hate when I can't touch paintings...
p.s. who is this?
